SUPERMARKET Waitrose has applied to extend the alcohol licence of its Northwood store.

The shop, in Green Lane, already has a licence to sell alcohol between 8am and 11pm. This covers its opening hours of 7.30am to 9pm weekdays, 7.30am to 8pm on Saturdays and 11am to 5pm on Sundays.

It wants to extend its licence to an hour earlier at 7am.

A spokesman for the store said the application was a matter of "standardising opening hours across all our shops" and the sale of alcohol would still be limited to opening hours.

Twelve-year-old Jasmine Turner was left devastated when doctors broke the news to her in October last year that she suffered from scoliosis, a condition which causes the spine to excessively curve sideways.

Within six months her condition had deteoriated so rapidly that she was told she would need a major operation.

A YOUNG Northwood dancer is reaching new heights after being selected to take part in an English Youth Ballet performance for the second time in a year.

Saira Mashru, 13, of the Fairview, Northwood, was chosen to to dance in a professional production of Copellia this weekend (2 and 3).

She battled off fierce competition to secure her place in the production at auditions.

The students at Merchant Taylor's School, Northwood, are taking part in the Wings of Hope achievement award.

Their mission is to raise money for the charity, which funds the education of poor and orphaned children in developing countries.

A DRUNK DRIVER who mowed down and killed a couple from a Northwood synagogue has been jailed for seven years.

Jonathan Knowles, 33, was travelling at about 60 miles an hour when he ploughed into Alan and Rochelle Bernard as they walked along the pavement of a road in the exclusive Sandbanks peninsular in Poole last September.

Work began on knocking down the derelict hall, which was a cinema before it became a social club for older people, in High Street, Northwood, on Monday.

Jane Whitehead, 20, and boyfriend Peter O'Driscoll, 19, took part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in support of the charity, which provides scanners designed to help with the early diagnosis of cancer.

Jane was continuing a tradition set by her father Miles, who raised more than £17,000 for the charity, at Mount Vernon Hospital, Rickmansworth Road, before he died in 2005.
