Runners from Ealing, Southall and Middlesex Athletics Club hope to raise £5,000 after their team-mate Shannon Powell collapsed during a race in Barnet on January 8, 2011.

They are hosting a sports quiz and running the last three miles of the London Marathon on Sunday - the Mini-Marathon for children.

Shannon, from Northolt, was a few days short of her 15th birthday when she suffered a fit during the Middlesex Cross Country Championships and was taken to hospital. The family later learned that she died from a rare heart condition.

Shannon's coach Tim Hannah said the team wanted to do something for their much-missed friend. "I was there when Shannon died and tried to save her with the others," he said.

"It really hit us all in a big way. We wanted to find something we can do to help save other people.

"We're supporting [the charity] CRY [Cardiac Risks in the Young] because they gave huge help to Shannon's parents after the event."

A sports quiz will be held in Chiswick on Friday from 7.30pm. Tickets are £15 and Manchester United has donated a signed football to be auctioned on the night.
