Pedalling through prayers for parish charity
PARISHIONERS held their own sporty charity challenge at the weekend - a 24-hour cyclethon that continued even through Sunday service.
While the congregation prayed, participants continued to pedal away on one of the six exercise bikes set up at Holy Trinity Church in Rickmansworth Road, Northwood.
Between noon on Saturday and 1pm Sunday - the extra hour added to compensate for the move to British Summer Time overnight - 80 parishioners took part in the challenge and helped raise £1,500 for the charity Giving Ministry Wheels.
The event was rounded off by a gentle cycle down to Ruislip Lido for a picnic on the hottest day of the year.
Parish administrator Sue Boultbee explained: "How many miles we did I don't know but we had six bikes on the go and they looked fantastic.
"We made sure at least one bike was running at all times, even during service.
"We wanted to show a bit of physical effort, which is what it is like travelling in Mozambique and Angola, where the money will be used."
London Diocesan Lent Appeal aims this year to raise £60,000 to fund new transport vehicles for ministry staff in the African countries, where three bishops are resident.
