TIME is running out to nominate outstanding members of the community for a Local Hero award.

This is the final week for entries into the ninth annual competition, run jointly by the Uxbridge Gazette and Leader Series, and Uxbridge College.

The Local Hero campaign acknowledges the hard work, dedication and determination shown by people who live, work or volunteer in the London Borough of Hillingdon.

It celebrates people who have put others first, overcome adversity or made a contribution to their local community.

There are five categories in the competition - Community Champion, Star Carer, Fabulous Fundraiser, Courageous Citizen and Outstanding Young Person.

Each category winner will receive £200 and a trophy, while the person crowned the overall Hero of Hillingdon will pocket £500.

This week, Bernard Roberts, a Second World War Veteran, has been put forward for the Fabulous Fundraiser category after collecting an amazing £250,000 for the Royal British Legion.

The 90-year-old was nominated by Lesley Crowcroft, who has also been entered in the Community Champion category for her years of hard work to make Eastcote a nicer place to live.

If you know someone who fits the bill, this is your last chance to nominate them and give them the chance of winning £500!

The closing date for nominations is this Friday, May 27 at 5pm.

To nominate, fill in the form in this week's Uxbridge Gazette or online at www.uxbridgegazette.co.uk/heroes.

Shortlisted nominees will be notified after the judges have made their decision in June.

The winners will be revealed at a glittering gala awards ceremony in July.

Please note under competition guidelines, staff from the Uxbridge Gazette and Leader Series, and staff and students from Uxbridge College cannot be nominated.

We'd like to hear from you.
