Northwood Golf Club hosted a competition in memory of former member, Rosie Williams (pictured), who succumbed to the disease in October 2008, aged 64.

The event, at the club in Rickmansworth Road yesterday (7) - which would have been Mrs Williams' 66th birthday - was held to raise cash for the ovarian cancer research unit at Hammersmith Hospital, where she was treated.

Some 82 golfers took part and after a bacon sandwich, they took to the course in groups of four.

They later returned to the club for a three-course meal, raffle, auction and live music from Irish folk band, the Biblecode Sundays.

Mrs Williams, a married mother-of-seven who lived in Chalfont St Peter, was best friends with fellow club member, Bridie Fitzpatrick, 60, who has organised the annual fundraising event for the past two years.

Mrs Fitzpatrick, who lives in Fulmer, Buckinghamshire, said: "Rosie was such a dear friend of mine, we met at an aerobics class in Chalfont St Peter and we just clicked, and that was the start of a beautiful friendship.

"I can't imagine ever finding such a wonderful friend that I have so much love and respect for."

As well as raising money for the hospital unit, Mrs Fitzpatrick, a mother-of-two with four grandchildren, also wants to boost awareness of ovarian cancer.

"Last year's event generated about £9,000 and we are hoping to top that this year," she said.

"But I really want to raise more awareness of ovarian cancer and encourage others to invest in research.

"Sadly, it was too late by the time Rosie was diagnosed, but it is something that all women should be aware of."

A golf competition in aid of the hospital unit will take place next year on October 6, 2011.
