Rickmansworth shop flooded last night for the second time in a fortnight
A SHOP in Rickmansworth was flooded last night (25) for the second time in a fortnight.
Staff at a branch of WH Smith in the High Street arrived this morning to find a 'soaking wet' shop floor, as a result of heavy rainfall overnight.
As a result, the shop remained closed for an extra hour this morning, while staff cleaned up the mess.
One of the shop assistants said: "A storm drain inside the shop overflowed and about half the carpet was soaking wet.
"When this happened last week, it was even worse - we had to close the shop for at least two hours and you can still see tide marks on the carpet.
"The worst thing is the smell of damp, which some customers have complained about, although the shop has been disinfected."
It is believed the problem could have been made worse by a blocked drain in the High Street.
A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Highways, which is responsible for maintaining roads across the county, said: "We are sorry to hear about this incident. While there has been exceptionally heavy rainfall in the last week, and the sheer volume of water has inevitably caused flash flooding.
"We are going out to Rickmansworth High Street today to check for any blocked drains and will clear them if needed."
