Inspirational women and their role in the community celebrated in Northwood

A DAY of celebration of the role of women in the community took place in Northwood earlier this month.

More than 50 women attended an International Women's Day event on March 8 at Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue, in Oaklands Gate.

The event, which was internationally themed Equal Opportunities, Progress for All, was organised by the Northwood Extended School Collaborative, which is made up of three secondary schools and nine primary schools.

They have worked hard to bring different communities from across Hillingdon together to celebrate the progress made by women over the last 50 years, and discuss the barriers women of today still face throughout the world.

Speaker Debbie David described the obstacles she had to overcome due to her learning difficulties, and how, through perseverance, parental support and grasping life's opportunities, she is working with Harrow Mencap to improve the lives of people in her situation.

The afternoon concluded with a workshop looking at the meaning of equality in women's lives, together with a tour of the synagogue and a closer look at the Ark and the scrolls.

Meave Darroux, parent support advisor for the Northwood Extended Schools Collaborative, said: "The women of Hillingdon have not only been inspired by the speakers but have also been given a rare opportunity to meet women from different faiths and backgrounds to share their personal experiences."
