Volunteers turn rags into riches to raise money for charity

MORE than 100 volunteers will transform donations from Rickmansworth charity shops into fashionable attire, for a fundraising catwalk show.

The Rags to Riches Fashion Show aims to show how old, unwanted clothes and fabrics can be recycled to create stylish, desirable outfits.

Proceeds will go towards Help the Aged, Oxfam and Sue Ryder - all charity shops in the High Street.

The fashion show, which takes place on February 20 at Watersmeet Theatre in Rickmansworth, will feature 40 original outfits. It has been organised by the Three Rivers Volunteer Centre and vinvolved Herts, part of the National Youth Volunteer Programme.

Some of the completely unique pieces on display will also be up for grabs by audience members. There will also be a charity raffle on the night, with prizes including a piece of designer jewellery.

Kathy Clarke, volunteer centre manager, said: "Rags to Riches hopes to give volunteers the opportunity to learn new skills, showcase their creative talents, get involved with local charitable projects and enthuse them to develop their interest in fashion.

"Who knows, it may just be the inspiration needed for the next Vivienne Westwood!

"The wealth of experience, time and hard work of the volunteers involved in the project has amazed me and there is a great community feel.

Mary Green, youth volunteering development manager for vinvolvedHerts added: "This project harnesses several current interests of young people: the environment, saving money, fashion and having fun. We hope to organise more such projects.

"It is particularly inspiring to see the number of young people getting involved as volunteers - anyone who doubts the community spirit of younger generations need have no fear - it is alive and thriving."

Help is still needed in the shape of designers, models, photographers, stage help, workshop venues, marketing, hair and make-up and more. To get involved, visit http://rickyragstoriches.co.uk
