Help for drug users released from prisons in Hertfordshire

A NEW initiative will help drug users released from prisons in Hertfordshire to kick their habit.

The scheme, Through the Gates, has been launched this month as part of the ground-breaking Drugs System Change pilot from Hertfordshire Drug Partnership - which includes the county council, police, probation and health services.

Offenders will be collected by a volunteer and taken to a drug treatment appointment, to ensure they don't make contact with a drug dealer along the way.

Volunteers will work with offenders in the run up to and following their release, and support them in completing forms, booking appointments and improving basic life skills.

Keith Emsall, executive member for community safety & culture, said: "Through the Gates offers offenders looking to turn over a new leaf a real opportunity to beat their drug addiction and stop them from turning back to crime to pay for drugs.

"This is just one of the ways we hope to improve support services for drug misusers and their families."

We'd like to hear from you.
