Neighbours open their homes for the day for Big Lunch event
NEIGHBOURS of a close-knit community opened their doors for a day to welcome each other into their homes.
Residents of Watkins Close, Northwood, hosted the 'Big Lunch' event on Sunday (19).
Resident Martin Coleman said: "It was never going to be easy, but the residents were rewarded by a decent turn out, despite the weather doing its best to spoil things. The residents organised and provided practically everything at their own expense, from the bouncy castle, to the gazebos and seating, and most of the food and refreshments.
"They were delighted to be joined by a number of people from outside 'The Close' who had heard about the event, and who were welcomed as new friends. They included residents from the sheltered housing scheme across the road, and two families new to the area."
More than 50 people attended the event, including the three Northwood councillors and Bina Tandoori, in High Street, Northwood, donated some food.
Mr Coleman said: "It was hard work, but the residents felt it worthwhile. At the end of the day many people left with a smile on their face and hopefully some happy memories of what can be achieved when a local community decides to do something."

As the resident named in this article I would like to just point out that while I first spotted 'The Big Lunch' when it was first advertised in the national press some months ago, I merely mentioned it to my next door neighbour as something we might get involved in. It was my neighbour
( Kara Remick ) who then did the majority of organising, and brought the event together.
We are very grateful to the majority of residents who helped out and contributed both in the planning, and on the actual day, and of course to the many friends, family and others who attended, many of whom also contributed in various ways.
Its also worth mentioning that we didnt 'open our homes', the whole point of the Big Lunch is that it was a 'street' festival.
That said, if we bought a smile to a few faces that day we achieved our aim.
