A SYNAGOGUE played host to a unique weekend attracting people from far and wide to literally sing their way through the Sabbath.

Participants from as far afield as Leicester, Hereford and Manchester joined Rabbis and musicians at Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue, in Oaklands Gate, Northwood, on July 24 and 25 for the 'Singing Weekend'.

Everyone learned religious chanting and took part in workshops to improve their vocal techniques, as well as having a go at playing the Shofar (a ram's horn blown to mark the Jewish New Year).

Over the course of the weekend the two dozen or so participants joined Northwood's regular congregants in leading two musical services as well as a short Havadalah, which marks the end of the Jewish Sabbath.

Northwood and Pinner Rabbi, Hillel Athias-Robles, said: "Shabbat is an incredibly joyful time for Jews, and as a community we have a strong tradition of singing and chanting to express that joy.

"There was something for everyone at the 'Singing Weekend', from the most modern to the most traditional.

"Hopefully we will now have created a new tradition which will have Jews from Northwood to the North West singing from sunrise to sunset."

GOOD friends whose mums suffer from the same disease have helped to raise nearly £140,000 by holding an annual sponsored walk.

Lisa Meleck, 24, of Watford Road, Northwood, and Natasha Adley, 23, of Stanmore, have been organising 10kForCrohns at Hyde Park for the past seven years.

This year's event, which was held on Sunday (26), was opened by popstar Duncan James and helped to raise £17,000 for the ForCrohns charity.

Miss Adley said: "The day went really well. We had some really great entertainment from a 25-piece steel band and a young hip hop dance act who were phenomenal.

"We also had a researcher there from St Mark's Hospital to say more about where the money goes."

This year 200 people took part in the event and 17-year-old Crohn's sufferer, Oliver Yang, from Edgware, also sang to keep the walkers entertained.

Miss Adley said: "We have been organising this event since we were 16 because both our mums suffer from it and so few people have heard of the illness. We want to raise awareness as well as raising money and we have teamed up with St Mark's Hospital to help fund research into the disease.

"My mum was 23 when she was diagnosed and Lisa's mum is in remission now, but there's no cure for it, just treatment.

"Not a lot is known about it and there are a lot of symptoms so it's hard to diagnose.

"It causes inflammation of the intestines so when you need the toilet you have to go straight away.

"Mum mum can't go and watch my brother play football in the park because there's no toilets there and she can't go on long journeys so it affects her everyday.

"Some people have to be in and out of hospital their whole lives though.

"All the events we do are very family orientated and they don't cost much to take part in because it's much more about getting everybody involved.

"We' like to hold more events but we need corporate support."

Miss Meleck and Miss Adley were also awarded a Cosmopolitan Women of the Year award in November 2007 for their work.

A FAMILY arts programme and a new music project have been awarded more than £39,000.

Arts Council England has awarded the two projects a total of £39,897 from its Grants for the arts scheme, funded by the National Lottery.

Hillingdon Council will receive £27,560 for a new music project, while Northwood Community Arts Group has been awarded £12,337 for a family arts programme.

With an ambition of continuing to put St John's United Reformed Church, in Hallowell Road, Northwood, at the centre of community arts activity in the area, the Arts Group will provide a comprehensive family arts programme.

It will be working with top arts organisations, including Albert & Friends Instant Circus and a leading professional samba group, to deliver a series of projects over the coming year. These will include the creation of an intergenerational samba group, presenting high quality children's theatre and providing circus skills sessions over the summer.

Hillingdon Council's project will focus on revitalising the borough's music scene through providing a music training programme for young people.

The project will also establish opportunities where local musical talent can be showcased at several festivals throughout the year and through the creation of a monthly music night, where young people who have participated in the programme will be invited to perform.
