NATIONWIDE in Northwood Hills is closing on Friday (28).

The building society has decided to close the branch in Joel Street because of low usage, the close proximity of other branches and the investment that would be needed to keep it open.

The closure will leave the high street without any banks or building societies and shopkeepers fear the area will become a ghost town.

VOLUNTEERS are needed to help keep the area clean and tidy by reporting problems to the council.

The Street Champions scheme is being relaunched in Ruislip, Eastcote and Northwood Hills to encourage people to sign up.

Street Champions are volunteers who act as the eyes and ears of Hillingdon Council by reporting problems including graffiti, abandoned cars, litter, and anti social behaviour.

The scheme is being relaunched at Winston Churchill Hall in Pinn Way, Ruislip, on Wednesday (26) from 7.30 to 9.30pm.

Anyone interested in becoming a Street Champion should call Claire Gibson on 01895 558 342, email streetchampions@hillingdon.gov.uk or visit www.hillingdon.gov.uk/streetchampions.

About 200 people gave blood and the younger members of the synagogue entertained the community's senior members as well as creating promotional materials for fairtrade.

The synagogue's older children collected over 10 trolley loads of goods from generous shoppers at Waitrose in Maxwell Road, Northwood, to be donated to Northwood Live at Home Scheme.

Mitzvah Day organiser, Rabbi Hillel Athias-Robles, said: "In these credit crunch times it's good to know we can all still do our bit for charity by giving not cash but a little time.

"That's what Mitzvah Day is all about and I am delighted that so many people turned out to support our event."
